Another March snow storm. And with the 24 inches of snow they got up state on the last storm it is going to keep the river cold for the next couple weeks. But that has not stopped several striper fishermen from getting out. Now they are not setting the world on fire but some bass have been caught in the Salem, Marcus Hook sections of the river. So far every fish has been picked up with bloodworms and from pictures most of the fish have been 18 to 24 inches. Tim fished the Tacony Bridge a couple afternoons only catching a catfish and a couple white perch.
Several other guys have been fishing the river for largemouth bass doing fair for the time of the year. Rick fishing up in Tullytown Cove picked up 8 bass one afternoon. All these fish were caught with Ned Rigs. Another fisherman in the Neshaminy Marina picked up a couple bass and yellow perch fishing minnows, hair jigs and 3 inch Senko worms. Over in Dredge Harbor Rick had a couple good afternoons with 2 to 5 bass fishing 4-inch lizards, 4 inch Senko’s and small bucktails. One if his buddy’s did real well with crappies fishing the back corner of Dredge with live minnows under a bobber.
I was up to Fall’s Township a couple times running the dog talking to a few of the bank fisherman that have not been doing anything yet. The only guy that has been picking up fish has been out in his kayak drifting worms for walleyes. He has picked up 11 fish so far this year. A few guys fishing Core Creek for bass said the lake has been dead. The shopping center lake one fisherman picked up a few smaller bass and catfish with minnows and worms. Penn Warner has been very good with lots of perch hitting minnows, twister tails and metal spoons. A few of the bass fisherman have picked up a few decent smallies fishing crankbaits in the deeper water. One report from Nockamixon with this fisherman catching 2 smallies and 1 largemouth bass fishing off the dam with live minnows. One of the smallies was 20 inches a bit over 5 pounds.
One fisherman on the Neshaminy Creek at Hulmeville Road has been picking up a few catfish with chunked eels and nightcrawlers. The upper part of the Pennypack I had one fisherman catching some nice bluegills on poppers and dry flies.
Several of the carp fishermen on the Schuylkill River have been doing very good with fish 10 to 20 pounds with boilies and different homemade carp baits. One of the groups of catfish crew was out a couple days this past week catching a few smaller catfish with shrimp and chicken livers. He heard of one bigger flathead taken up in the Reading area with a live bluegills.
Jersey Lake has been very good for bass, pickerel, yellow perch and crappies. Jerry fishing his different lakes off 55 has been catching 5 to 10 pickerel each trip out with live minnows. Rich said Lake Lenape has been very good for pickerel 12 to 19 inches fishing Rapala’s and twister tails. One report from Elmer with this fisherman catching a bunch of crappies with smaller twister tails and marabou jigs. Stan had a couple good days on Union with yellow perch and crappies fishing shiners, twister tails and small tubes. He has caught crappies 12 to 14 inches with some yellow perch 13 to 15 inches.
With all the wind I have not talked to one person for a saltwater report. So I have to end it here. Mike did get the tide charts printed, he also posted on Face Book that you can download to your phone or print from home. I’m still trying to figure how to attach it to the main web sight so give me a bit of time there. Good luck if you do get out. Bill
Quick update…. Hopefully this pending weather is last of Mother Nature toying with the early fishing season. Don’t forget to stop by on 3/25 between 10-2 and meet the new owner. Will have some specials to offer as well as raffles and door prizes to give away. Hot dogs, popcorn and drinks will be available from 11-1. Hope to see you then. Mike
