Ice Fishing Time Of Year

Well we expected settlement on Thursday and here is it Friday still held up with the bank. Nothing like the day of closing that the bank is asking for signatures on forms they have been holding for 5 months, surveys that were suppose to be done by the bank or title company and several other problems. So we will be open all weekend but still no licenses and cash only.

With this weather ice fishing has been all the rage this past week. All the lakes in the Pocono’s have 8 to 10 inches of ice, lakes in the Philadelphia area with 4 to 6 inches of ice and most all the south Jersey lakes 3 to 6 inches of ice. Penn Warner has been great with tons of yellow and white perch, pickerel and pike hitting live minnows, spoons and Rapala ice jigs. One customer had a 37-inch pike that weighed 19 pounds. Core Creek some perch and crappies hitting mealworms, twister tails and smaller ice jigs tipped gulp maggots. Levittown Lake I only had one report with this customer picking up a couple trout with Kastmasters. Nockamixon one fisherman picked up a bunch of crappies, perch and bluegills jigging metal and ice jigs tipped with baits and rubber trailers.

Jersey Lakes have been on fire. One fisherman picking up 25 to 50 big yellow perch each trip on Stone Tavern. He also said guys have been doing good with pickerel fishing Rapala ice jigs, Kastmasters, Cleo spoons and live minnows. Newton Lake a few guys have been doing pretty well with bass fishing live minnows, spoon and Rapala ice jigs. Batso Lake has been very good for pickerel and bluegills fishing twister tails, minnows, spoons and Rapala ice jigs. One bad report with one fisherman on Round Valley jigging for lake trout for several days without a single fish. He said there are a few guys picking up perch with smaller jigs tipped with live bait.

Up state on Brady’s Lake one fisherman has been limiting out on brown trout fishing power baits, Kastmasters and smaller Rapala ice jigs. They are also doing well with pickerel on this lake. Duck Harbor Pond has been another great spot for trout, yellow perch, crappies, pickerel and golden shiners. These guys have been fishing mealworms, power baits, spoons and Rapala ice jigs. Shohola has been great for pickerel fishing live minnows and Rapala ice jigs.

Now the upper Delaware River and Susquehanna Rivers are full of ice and no one has been out for the past 10 days. I had a couple reports of carp being caught on the Schuylkill River Grey’s Ferry with pop up and regular boilies. One customer picked up 6 in a couple hours. And below the dam some good numbers of walleyes being picked up on 2 and 3-inch power shads. Here you have to be real careful of the ice-covered rocks as the tides drop down.

Saltwater fishing has been down to the guys heading north off Block Island up into Massachusetts for cod and tilefish. And these guys have been crushing it bringing home limits each trip the weather allows them out. There were a few smaller stripers still being picked up in the back bays but as of the other day most of these waters are ice covered.

Well that is all I have this week. I hope the next report I will be an employee of Brinkman’s and not the owner. This time will tell. Hope everyone had a great holiday season. Bill
