The Fisherman Magazine’s annual “members only” contest, the Dream Boat Challenge, is officially underway this week with a season-long quest to win a new Steiger Craft 21 DV Boat powered by a Yamaha 200HP outboard motor, along with many other great prizes. A year ago this time the 7th largest bluefish of the 2016 Dream Boat Challenge came from New Jersey, a 19.32-pounder – in fact, four of last year’s top 10 fish came during the spring run! The size of the gators racing through local bays and rivers right now should have subscribers chomping at the bit at the trophy chopper potential this week! An 8-pound weakfish was weighed in at a Dream Boat Challenge weigh station in Cape May County this past week, definitely a Steiger kind of tiderunner – just a week out of May’s full moon, it’s time to start collecting the pinkies and sorting subsurface swimmers for a shot at the leaderboard. The first “boomers” of the drum season have come to scale, and big stripers continue to come by way of the upper reaches of the Delaware Bay and Raritan where baits and trolled lures continue to score. Windy conditions mid-week, and nothing pleasant in the Friday forecast – but things should clear out and warm up for the Saturday and Sunday action as the 2017 season continues to ramp up for Delaware and New Jersey anglers.
