I have to start out by apologizing for the bait situation the past week. We are buying all the bloodworms that we can get our hands on and so far they have not been the biggest or best worms I have sold in years past. But if we are holding out for big worms we won’t have anything in stock. We have started getting some sandworms in and so far the few guys that have brought them are still doing as well as the bloods on smaller fish. This coming weekend is not looking much better other than having one day of rain that should cut back some of the sales.

Myself I was out with Helen on Tuesday evening to a windy cold couple hours. We fished bloodworms and bunker catching 7 stripers and 1 catfish. Had to bag it early with Helen freezing. So I went back out Wednesday morning and fished about 10 different spots to catch 30 stripers and 5 catfish. All the stripers were 12 to 19 inches and the cats 2 to 5 pounds. Bloodworms, bunkers and clams were working this day. Now over all the most fish are being caught with bloodworms but I have not heard of one fish over 24 inches. Now all the bigger fish I seen pictures of and heard of were all caught with bunker. 3 or 4 bigger fish were taken off the beach below the Tacony Bridge. 5 to 8 bigger fish were taken off Station Avenue. 1 to 3 bigger fish were taken off the beach at the Burlington Bristol Bridge. All these fish were 30 to 40 inches. Now still most of the big fish are still being caught down river at Salem and the D O D section of the river. Here bunker and clams have been catching several fish 30 to 44 inches.  Even at Trenton there are some bigger fish being caught during the evening hours. These fish are being caught with poppers, crankbaits and shad bodies. Most of these fish have been 24 to 36 inches. They have even picked up a few stripers as far as Fireman’s Eddy. These couple fish were 22 to 24 inches.

Next best thing has been the shad fishing in the upper Delaware River. Trenton has been fair with most guys having to fight off the herring to catch shad. Weezer was up on Monday catching only two shad. Spoons have been working best. Yardley has been dead but Washington’s Crossing up to Lambertville has been super hot. These guys have been catching as many as 50 fish in each boat. Spoons and smaller darts are working best. Frank Mitchell had one of his best day landing over 50 fish on Monday. Now some other good spots have been Bull’s Island, Byran, Upper Black Eddy, Portland and the Water Gap. Kevin has been crushing fish at the 80 bridges with spoons and 1/16 bright colored shad darts. Evening has been the best fishing.

Trout fishing has still been very good in the Pennypack even know it was not restocked this past week. They are supposed to do the next restocking Thursday next week. Guys fishing Welsh Road up to Rhawn Street have been catching 1 to 3 fish each trip over. Most of these guys are doing best with power baits, wax worms and spinners. At the Boulevard up to Woodward with these fish hitting corn, wax worms, power baits, spinners and power trout worms. Further up at Pine Road Jack and his son picked up 11 fish on Tuesday all with Rooster Tails, Panther Martins and C P Swings. Jim said the trout are still hitting well at Levittown Lake with these fish hitting power baits, mealworms, spinners and spoons. Here they are also catching some crappies and small bass with spinners and trout magnets. One fisherman at the upper Neshaminy picked up a nice 22-inch rainbow that weight 5.2 pounds caught with a salted minnows. He also had 4 other fish picked up with power baits and mealworms.

Nockamixon has been really good this past week for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and crappies. One John fished on Sunday crushing bass up to 6 pounds. His big fish was a 6.2 smallmouth bass. He also had several largemouth and smallmouth 3 to 4 pounds. He did best fishing minnows along the rocks in deep water. The other John had a decent day with bass catching 11 fish up to 3 pounds. He did best with spinner baits along the deep drop offs. But his best fishing was crappies along the docks catching 25 fish 11 to 13 inches. Small tubes fished under a bobber. Magnolia Lake was really good for smaller bass with spinners, plastic worms and smaller crankbaits. These guys were catching 3 to 8 fish each trip. The lake behind Club Nirvana was also real good for smaller bass. These guys were fishing 3 inch Senko’s catching 20 bass 10 to 14 inches. Penn Warner has been great with white perch, crappies and pickerel hitting minnows along the shoreline. Chuck and Jay had one day with over 25 fish. The shopping center lake has been fair for smaller bass, bluegills and smaller catfish. These guys are hitting nightcrawlers and minnows the best. Ron had a great day on Struble Lake with bigger yellow perch fishing trout magnets and smaller tubes. He said some of these fish were 12 to 13 inches.

Now the Schuylkill River has been good up and down the river. Guys fishing the Art Museum have been doing great with stripers, shad, perch, catfish and walleyes. The walleye fisherman has been fishing during the night hours. Fishing shad bodies, Super Flukes and Salt Shakers guys have been catching 3 to 8 fish a night with some fish up to 19 inches. If you’re looking for shad darts and spoons jigged out in the rocks have been good for fish 3 to 5 pounds. The stripers have been hitting 5 and 6-inch shad bodies, poppers and shallow crankbaits. Most of these fish have been 20 to 30 inches. Further down river several guys have been doing great with 12 to 20 inch stripers, white and yellow perch and catfish. These guys are fishing bloodworms, bunker, nightcrawlers and chicken livers. Further up the river at Gladwyne flathead cat fisherman have been catching a few fish 12 to 20 pound with live and chunked bluegills and live perch. Up at Norristown one fisherman picked up a 32 inch 19 pound flathead with a live bluegill. That was the only fish landed after breaking off another 4 fish that night.

Jersey reports were slow this past week. Jerry still crushing fishing in his south jersey lakes with live minnows, plastic worms and twister tails. Tons of white perch, crappies and pickerel. He also has been fishing the Cooper River doing well with gizzard shad mixed in with the crappies. Minnows and smaller twister tails working best. Richie picked up a few decent bass in Lake Lenape this past week with Shad Raps and Senko worms. Mixed in were plenty of pickerel. His buddies crushing smaller stripers and bigger white perch in the lower Egg Harbor River. They are fishing small grubs, shad bodies, Kastmasters and strip squid. John hit Union last Saturday catching bunch of yellow perch, crappies and smaller bass with minnows, grubs, tubes, plastic worms and top water frogs. Tom took a couple over cast days and headed up to Hapatcong for muskies. Fishing jerk baits, big spinners and large spoons he picked up 3 fish 36, 33 and 29 inches. He also landed a 5-½ pound smallmouth bass and tons of 16 to 20 inch pickerel.
Saltwater fishing turned on big time this past week for bluefish from Atlantic City up to Long Beach Island. Fish 4 to 13 pounds were caught with metal spoons, metal jigs, poppers, and crankbaits and shad bodies. Some guys also did very good fishing bait such has chunked bunker, strip mackerel, clams and mullet. The Raritan Bay has also been hot for stripers 10 o 40 pounds fishing live and chunked bunker, live eels, trolling Mann’s 25 plus and Mojo Rigs. There also has been a decent bass bite at Long Beach Island around the jetties. These guys are doing best with live eels. A few reports of smaller stripes at Cape May up to Wildwood fishing clams off the beach. Most of these fish have been 15 to 24 inches. Up in the Delaware Bay a few bass are being caught off the beach of Fortescue and Reed’s Beach. These fish are hitting clams and chunked bunker.

Well that is all I have time for this week. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Bill
