Fisherman Magazine Update

March 1 is transition time at the Garden State, with striped bass and winter flounder taking the spotlight in the middle of the coming week. For this weekend though, New Jersey’s winter tautog and porgy season will take a seasonal break as of February 28, so many charter and party boats are getting in 11th hour trips from Friday through Tuesday (Delaware and Maryland anglers continue targeting big tautog through March). The back bay, river and creek fishery for striped bass in Jersey should offer a gangbuster bite given the mild winter, and many local shops are gearing up with bloodworms and striper rigs, some even offering special prizes during the first two weeks of the striped bass reopening; though a few more few reports of striped bass along frontside beaches in Ocean County were reported again of the weekend. From Thursday through Sunday, join The Fisherman Magazine at the 7th Annual Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks, PA from February 23-26.

Not long after last week’s video forecast was posted, just as snow began to fall along the Jersey Coast, we received good reports on short stripers whacking plastics and small swimmers in the Ocean County surf. So while most casters have been anxiously awaiting the March 1 striped bass opening in the back bays and creeks of the Garden State, suddenly the question is, are there enough fish to be had along the beach right now to make a three-hour surf shift worth the effort? Perhaps you can discuss that and more with fellow surf fishermen this Saturday, February 18 at Surf Day at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, NJ – be sure to stop by The Fisherman booth for details on special offers from Star & Yo-Zuri at this surfcasters exclusive show in Monmouth County. We’ll also be out at the New Jersey Boat Sale and Expo in Edison this week, presenting seminars in conjunction with the Recreational Fishing Alliance everyday through Sunday. The local fishing seminars get underway on Thursday, February 16 at 2 p.m. with The Fisherman’s Jim Hutchinson, Jr. talking up stripers & bunker for the spring and fall run. Best bet for a tug on the line this weekend, the final days of winter action with porgies and blackfish off the coast, while white perch action has intensified in the local creeks, lagoons and canals.
