Had a great week. Hit Pennsauken Golf Course on Wednesday shooting a nice 92, which is a better round than last week. Came home hit the river for a couple hours picking up 8 to 10 stripers all with bloodworms. Thursday Helen headed out with me early trying to beat the rain. We were on the river about 8 and fished till lunchtime. Picked up 25 stripers and 2 catfish. These stripers were 12 to a19 inches. Helen caught the big fish of the day. Friday I headed out 9 till 12 having the best day of the season. Boating 26 stripers, 2 big river perch all with bloodworms and a nice 3-pound catfish with bunker. This was a bad windy day and when the tide changed I headed home. Anthony fished next to me a couple of these days catching 20 plus stripers each day. He caught all his fish with bloodworms and had several fish 19 to 24 inches. So it looks like a great early start with the big cows still on the way up river. South at the airport plenty of fish 15 to 24 inches but I have still not heard of a keeper. Same at the Tacony Bridge with several fish caught up to 22 inches. I even heard of several stripers taken at Trenton with plugs and bait.
Shad fishing has picked up this past week. Anthony and Weezer were up on Wednesday catching 2 fish and loosing a few others. They said the guys fishing off the wall did much better with most of the fish right along the shoreline. These fish were all picked up with spoons and darts. Washington’s crossing one fisherman boated 5 shad missing a few others. He again caught all the fish with shad spoons. Further up the river guys have been doing very well with walleyes fishing from New Hope up to Point Pleasant. These guys have been doing best with minnows and twister tails. Charlie fish Point Pleasant on Tuesday catching 3 walleyes 17 to 22 inches. He picked these fish up on spider grubs in smoke and pumpkinseed.
Core Creek has still been very good for perch and smaller crappies in the main lake. One fisherman off the dam picked up a few 15-inch crappies with trout magnets before getting chased off the rocks. The upper end only one fisherman picked up a nice 19 inch 4 pound bass with a white spinner bait early in the week. Penn Warner has still been hot for perch and crappies all over the lake. One tournament fisherman was in showing me pictures of fish 4 to 5 plus pounds taken last weekend. He said everyone did well on bigger bass that day. Jim said fall’s Township is picking up on smaller bass. The fish have been hitting smaller rubber skirted jigs tipped with Zoom brush hogs; 4-inch power worms and beetle spin spinner baits. Schuylkill guys are starting to send me some good reports with 5 to 12 catfish an evening with chicken livers, night crawlers and shrimp. So far no flatheads but they usually don’t start catching them till the water hits 60 degrees. Nockamixon for several guys has been pretty good for yellow perch and crappies just fishing along the shoreline. These guys are doing best with minnows, shiners and small jigs. Green Lane Reservoir one fisherman picked up a couple nice pike with spinner baits and spoons. These fish were 29 and 34 inches. FDR Park one fisherman said there are plenty of bluegills and smaller bass hitting minnows, worms, twister tails, jigs and spinners.
Saltwater action has been great in the back bays and rivers but out front I have not heard much. Just a few guys heading north doing fair on cod from New York north. But the Raritan Bay for smaller stripers has been fantastic. These fish have been hitting metal, bucktail, shad bodies, clams, bloodworms and chunked bunker. Most of the fish have been 22 to 26 inches. Oyster Creek several guys have been talking up plenty of stripers and monster white perch with bloodworms, minnows, strip squid and clam stripers. These stripers have been running 15 to 22 inches. Colin’s Cove on the Mullica has been very good for bigger white perch and short stripers fishing with bloodworms, minnows, grass shrimp and 4 inch Gulp mullet in white. And one fisherman behind Harrah’s picked up a couple winter flounder with bloodworms over the weekend.
I know all the Jersey Lake have still been very good for pickerel, bass, crappies and yellow perch but this past week I did not get any reports back. Hint, Hint!!
Well that is all I have for this week. Again please check out your rods for guides and tips with only a couple weeks till trout season. Also a great time to come in and get your fishing licenses and fresh line before we are gammed out the door. Bill
